Hard-working Hanley primed for huge season

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Each morning for Hanley Ramirez starts off with a couple of hours of hitting in the cages.The Marlins’ three-time All-Star is a regular in the cages with hitting coach John Mallee, whom he greatly respects.

“Every day we’re working out, spending like two hours in the cage,” Ramirez said. “I love it.”

Determined to become more of the hitter he was in 2009 than ’10, Ramirez is starting to get his timing back. It’s been reflected in his performance, especially with his triple off Detroit’s Justin Verlander on Thursday night.

John Mallee of Schererville, center, will return to the Florida Marlins as their hitting coach after taking over midway through this season.

This past season, the hits just kept coming for the Florida Marlins. Except they weren’t the type hitting coach John Mallee and his team had hoped for. “We were dropping like flies,” Mallee said of the rash of injuries that decimated the Marlins during the year.

Edwin Rodriguez wasn’t the only Marlins staff member who received strong endorsements from players. Several hitters said they would love to continue their relationship with John Mallee.

The Marlins promoted Mallee from minor league hitting coordinator to replace Jim Presley, who in June was dismissed along with manager Fredi Gonzalez. With the exception of pitching coach Randy St. Claire, who is signed through 2011, Mallee and the rest of the coaches are in limbo until the Marlins hire a manager.

MIAMI GARDENS — Not even the Marlins’ coaching staff is immune to the rash of injuries that’s plagued the organization this year.

The Marlins were without two more uniformed personnel Monday as Emilio Bonifacio was scratched from the lineup with left hamstring tightness. In addition, hitting coach John Mallee is feared to have torn the biceps tendon off the bone when he bent down to pick up the pitching platform behind the “L” screen during batting practice.
